Yes, we said smoothie bowl. The quintessential healthy smoothie has long since been a classic breakfast food or healthy afternoon snack. It’s perfect for thwarting the peckish feeling we all get sometimes…

But you can take smoothies to the next level and really pack in the good stuff by serving them as bowls topped with additional nutrient-dense ingredients! Here we feature four different superfoods as toppings: goji berries, coconut slivers, hemp seeds and chia seeds, which are all extremely rich in nutrients.

Goji berries, in particular, are well known for extending longevity. They’ve been hailed as a “fountain of youth” and used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. Modern scientific analyses of the nutritional content of goji berries show that they contain three times more antioxidants than pomegranates and four times more than blueberries. Goji berries are also anti-inflammatory and can help the immune system fight disease as well as improve digestion.

Enjoy goji berries as an excellent high-protein snack that also offers fiber, more than 20 different vitamins and minerals, unsaturated fatty acids, including alpha-linolenic acid and linoleic acid, and many health-promoting beneficial phytochemicals, such as beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, lycopene, cryptoxanthin, lutein and polysaccharides.

INGREDIENTS

1 C frozen strawberries
1 large mango
1 banana, previously sliced and frozen
1 tablespoon cacao
2-3 tablespoon coconut milk
1 tablespoon goji berries
1 tablespoon coconut slivers
1 TBSP chia seeds
1 TBSP hemp seed hearts

 

DIRECTIONS

♦ Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend until creamy and smooth. Add some more coconut milk (or water) to thin if needed.

♦ Divide between 2 serving bowls, sprinkle with your toppings, and enjoy!
